Nutrition / Allergies

Gluten free, lactose free, low in Histamines etc. – to refrain from certain food groups has become a  favourite phenomena of our civilized society. People who frequently feel discomforted after eating, and suffer from diarrhea, constipation, or complain of unpleasant bloating, are nowadays easily tempted to make radical dietary changes without medical supervision.

Prominent role models daily proclaim their latest diet slogans in social media. Good friends also advise,   how fit and symptom-free they have become since they have deleted… from their meal plan. With easy access to the numerous special ‘free from’ products that lure you from the supermarket shelves, should you start the self-experiment?

No, because maybe the medical conditions are caused by entirely different things. Moreover, such self-caused self-tests can cause nutritional deficiencies.

Risks and side effects of self-diagnostics

For indigestion, many people think it is a food intolerance or food allergy, such as:

  • Gluten / Wheat Intolerance
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Fructose intolerance
  • Histamine intolerance
  • Problems with food products such as Tomatoes, celery, nuts, seeds, fish, shellfish or apples

There may be different triggers responsible for similar symptoms as the ones stated above (partly linked to other, far-reaching mechanisms in the organism). Therefore, extensive medical experience, patience and professional diagnostic sense are needed as soon as it comes to making a diagnosis and to developing personal health and nutrition strategies.

Well-intended, radical renouncement decisions made on your own regarding your well-being can often do more harm than good. For example, if a one-sided food intake leads to an insufficient supply of vital nutrients. And even more so when it is not clarified that no other more serious intestinal disease is present (eg ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, or even a tumor in the small intestine or colon).

Holistic, systematic search for causes – step by step

At my practice the philosophy is to take into consideration the patient in his entirety. According to the diagnostic procedure (including personal lifestyle, eating habits and family history) I begin with a thorough, confidential conversation in which I ask my patient precise questions based on my professional knowledge and my work experience of many years.

Through this almost detective-like procedure, I usually manage to pinpoint the suspected area and to define the necessary and reasonable measures to further clarify the potential food intolerances or allergies. This can be for example:

  • Physical examinations
  • Keeping a diet diary
  • Detection of certain blood values
  • Examination of stool samples

We strongly advise against the often overpriced, self purchased food intolerance tests. Here the common rule applies: more class than the mass of such investigations. Apart from the fact that some of these tests have a rather low validity value.

Individual nutrition counselling
with food allergies and intolerances

If a clear result is obtained based on the analysis, a restricted diet may be the result. Using the example of wheat it can be illustrated clearly that there is wide variation in this respect –it can give quite an impact on the quality of life of patients:

  • Celiac disease: inflammation and destruction of important intestinal villi – requires a life long strict abstention from even the smallest amounts of gluten (wheat, spelt, etc.)
  • Wheat Allergy I: the body’s reaction to certain protein components > abstention from wheat
  • Wheat allergy II (IGE RAST test positive for wheat pollen allergy.): Means a less strict avoidance strategy, depending on individual expression
  • Wheat sensitivity (often confused with gluten sensitivity): probable cause are ATI’s (amylase trypsin inhibitors): less strict avoidance strategy, individual character

The result of my consultation is a personally tailored diet plan that fits your needs and your bio / life rhythm. After about two weeks, we will have another extensive conversation to reflect first successes and discuss further action.

Essential for success: only intensive counselling with high investment of time leads to the success. I will devote this time to you.
